President's Message

President's Message

Welcome to the Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Association (NCMTA)!

My name is Fran Wisnewski, I am the President of NCMTA. In addition, I am a professor in the Teacher Education Department of Molloy University where I teach math methods courses to preservice teachers; a job that I love. After teaching math for more than 30 years in K-8 schools, I am excited to share my love of mathematics with future teachers. Inspiring a love of mathematics in students and teachers across Nassau County is one of our goals as the Nassau County Mathematics Teachers Association!

Our History

In 1944, some very dedicated math teachers who wanted to foster a love of mathematics founded this organization. Their purpose then and our purpose now is still the same. We strive to “engage teachers, parents, and students in educational programs that lead to a greater understanding of and interest in mathematics.”

Who We Are Now

We are a professional organization with members who volunteer their time and expertise to the mathematical community of Nassau County. NCMTA members share best practices by participating in our events or by simply attending Board Meetings throughout the academic year. Over the years, we have evolved and grown with the mathematical needs and concerns of districts, teachers, and students in Nassau County. We are dedicated to getting more members involved, as we appreciate the input and ideas shared by math professionals across the county.

Our Signature Events

Our yearly events continue to be well received with outstanding reviews. If you would like to learn about current trends in mathematics consider attending one or more of the following events. NCMTA is proud to announce that we have been approved by NYSED to be a provider of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) for Professional Development Requirements.
How to Make Math Count Conference
The How to Make Math Count Conference is held annually in January at Molloy University. Participants at this conference enjoy an engaging keynote followed by smaller breakout sessions on a variety of topics for K-8 math teachers. We are always looking for speakers and volunteers to help run the event. Please reach out to us if you want to get involved.

Spring Dinner

Each year we host a Spring Dinner where we honor exceptional teachers from Nassau County schools who have been nominated by their colleagues. In addition, we honor student teachers from local colleges who have shown a special talent for teaching mathematics and have been nominated by their field supervisors and/or cooperating teachers.  Please consider nominating worthy individuals for one of these honors.

Math Tournament (Grades 4, 5, and 6)

Each spring we hold a Grace E. Quinlan Math Tournament where students in grades 4-6 compete as individuals and school teams to solve Math Olympiad problems. Please consider bringing a team and/or volunteering to help with the Math Tournament. It is always a wonderful event for all those who volunteer and participate.

Board Meetings

A few times a year we host board meetings at Molloy University. All NCMTA members and interested individuals are invited to attend. We discuss our events and new ways to engage the community in promoting mathematics. Look for dates posted on this website as they become available.
In closing, I invite you to consider sharing your expertise and knowledge, whether you are a new or seasoned professional. Help us connect theory to practice by sharing your ideas with others. The networking opportunities that you will discover through NCMTA are limitless.
Please peruse our website for more details about our events and consider getting involved or attending one of our events. We are always looking for new volunteers and new ideas. We have a great team and look forward to your participation!
Feel free to reach out to me at any time to ask questions about our organization, to share ideas, and to inquire about ways to get involved.
